Bulgarian folk artist Tatiana Sarbinska, dubbed the “voice sarbinskaof Bulgaria”, is considered to be one of the greatest artists of her day. She is a recipient of the prestigious honor of National Treasure status, compliments of the Bulgarian government, as she is recognized as instrumental in the preservation of her country’s native music culture. Formerly featured soloist with the Pirin Ensemble,  she continues to enjoy an illustrious career as a vocalist and has recorded her own cds Makedonsko Devojche  and Katerino Mome.  Also highly respected as a teacher, she has shared her numerous talents in the United States since 1991, through the direction of various ensembles, music events, and workshops.
Bulgarian super star Theodosii Spassov is known for his ability to infuse a folk sound into other genres, such as jazz and classical. As a virtuoso of the wooden shepherd’s flute, he has toured the world extensively and spassov-1recorded numerous cds both as a contributing performer as well as on his own. He is the recipient of multiple awards including a Grammy and has also enjoyed success as a film composer. He currently directs the famed Filip Kutev National Folk Song and Dance Ensemble.
His Theodosii Spassov Folk Project Band  (scroll to bottom of page) is a group of highly talented and well accomplished folk musicians. The membership, in addition to Spassov, includes Peyo Trendafilov Peev (gadulka), Ivan Simeonov Georgiev (gaida),  Genadiy Savov Rashkov (tupan), and Petor Sashkov Milanov (tambura and guitar).

This concert is the finale to a series of  grand events that make up the 7th annual Bulgarian Cultural Festival in New England (March 29 – May 3rd). This year’s landmark festivities commemorate 100 years of Bulgarian independence. I had the wonderful fortune of attending the performance of the Bulgarian folk dance ensemble Bulgare (see previous post – 4/2/09) and they were fantastic! I fully expect that this concert will be of equal caliber. I also want to mention here the folk duo who will open the concert, Vessela and Valeri = Goli.
