An Authentic Peruvian Feast Accompanied by the Soothing Sounds of Native Pan Pipes

machu-p-8Just recently, me and some companions happened to be out and about in Union Square, Somerville. What a cultural Mecca it is! The area is teeming with ethnic eating establishments of varied nationalities. Of course naturally, I was on the lookout for  one that offered live world music along with its cuisine. We stumbled upon this Peruvian eatery called Machu Picchu. They do offer live pan pipe music on Fridays, however, unfortunately we were there on a Thurs. evening. Rats!!! Nevertheless, we truly enjoyed our dining experience.
When we walked in I was particularly struck with the scenic backdrop behind the bar. It was a most gorgeous picture of Machu Picchu itself. The rest of the decor included some nice cultural touches, including  the dinnerware. I especially liked the spaciousness of the place and the congenial wait staff. They were more than eager to answer any questions you might have about their native cuisine. 
Their extensive menu is loaded with Peruvian delights! One wants to try them all. Let me entice you by mentioning just a few of them here.  Appetizers include Palta Primavera (stuffed palta (avocado) with garden vegetables machu-picchu-16and strips of chicken with mayonnaise) and Papa Rellena
(deep fried mashed potato, stuffed with meat, egg and raisins). As far as main courses go, of course they serve the Peruvian staple ceviche (raw seafood marinated in lemon or lime juice and spices). Then there’s Pollo Chan Chan (chicken breast with shrimp, served with steamed green beans and spinach mashed potatoes) as well as Seco de Carne a la Norte, an old family recipe of (marinated beef simmered with cilantro and chicha de Jora, served with canary beans and rice). If you still have room for dessert, you can satisfy your sweet tooth quite nicely with Crema Volteada (a luscious caramel flan) or an order of alfajores (sugar cookies filled with a caramel-like dulce de leche and topped with powdered machu-picchu-26sugar). The great thing about the cookies is that they serve you a large number of them- perfect for sharing when you just want to savor that little sweet touch to finish off your meal.
But wait, there’s more! In addition to all of this, Machu Picchu also offers a wide array of distinctly Peruvian drinks to accompany your order such as, the Pisco Sour (made with a native Peruvian brandy and egg whites), Peruvian beer, and Inca Cola (Peruvian soda).
I cannot wait to come back on a Friday night to experience some live Peruvian music. They informed us that the performance usually begins sometime between 8:00 and 8:30 p.m., but I would call to verify the time if I were you.
