The Boston Village Gamelan (BVG) is a 7 member gong ensemble which specializes in the performance of traditonal music from the city of Surakarta and surrounding regions of central Java. The oldest American ensemble of its kind, this group has been active since 1979 and continues to perform throughout New England. Artistic director Barry Drummond has led BVG since 1992 and has studied music extensively on location in Indonesia. The ensemble’s performance history includes the honor of being a featured performer at the Indonesian pavilion at the worlds fair ‘Expo ’86 and in a joint concert with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra entitled East Meets West.
