Portuguese Fado Legend Mariza Comes to Boston – Saturday, November 7th @ 8:00 p.m.
Portuguese fado artist Mariza is not only legendary in her own homeland, but internationally as well for her performance success with this folk-based genre. She identifies fado as a highly emotional style, and projects this well to her audiences through her engaging stage presence and dramatically sensitive singing. Her most endearing trademark is her ability to deliver the traditional standards with a highly effective modern flare, all her own. As a member of the New Fado Movement, she is forever bringing new styles of singing to the genre and as a result is becoming increasingly popular world-wide. Currently, she has sold over 5 million albums. Visit her website for rave performance reviews and to hear samples of her marvelous singing. (also on MySpace)
Although she moved to Lisbon at age three, Mariza was born in Mozambique and is of Afro-Portuguese heritage. She began singing very early on and by the age of 5, was singing along with the locals in her parent’s restaurant. Her career took off when she performed a memorial tribute to then Portuguese fado legend Amalia Rodrigues. Who would have know then that she would be the one to eventually follow in her great footsteps? After this performance she was encouraged by friends to record and hasn’t looked back since.
Of course, she has won countless awards both locally and internationally. In her native Portugal she has been named Artist of the Year (2003) as well as Person of the Year (2004) , and has also received a Golden Globe Award for Best Individual Performer (2006). She has won the BBC Radio 3’s very prestigious award for Best European Singer in World Music no less than 3 times (2003, 2005, 2006). Her albums have made the Top 10 in countries world-wide and 2 of them were nominated for Latin Grammy Awards (2007/2008). She has received numerous other awards internationally from as far away as Africa and was invited to sing at the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece with the well-known rock group Sting. Mariza continues to sport her wild popularity at major concert venues word-wide from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. In addition to all this, and very importantly I might add, she has been consistently recognized as an ambassador of international goodwill and has been called upon to promote her native Portuguese culture in various official capacities.
