Happy New Year! – World Music and Dance Abound at Boston’s First Night 2010 – Thursday, December 31st (Afternoon – Midnight)

Oh boy, oh boy! It’s that time of the year again to experience Boston’s fine local artistic talent in the biggest mega-performance setting of the entire year. Yes, First Night is soon upon us yet again. I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for the audience in the way of ethnic-oriented performances at this year’s New Year’s Eve festivities. So, here is a list of what I could find, at this point anyway, as a result of perusing the schedule. It looks very promising indeed! Go ahead and take a peek.

Fedex Family Festival (schedule)

A Major Dance – includes ethnic dance performances by members of the Roxbury Center for the Performing Arts

Bombay Cinema – a film festival (featuring Bollywood music soundtracks)

Chu Ling Dance Academy – Chinese dance

Ellis Paul – composer/singer of ethnic songs on themes of world peace

First Night Drum Central – drumming groups Batuk Axe and IntaAfrika perform with students

Anime Film Fest – featuring music soundtracks from this popular film genre from Japan

Ethnic Puppet Shows and Storytelling –  various performances featured throughout the afternoon

Additional Afternoon Programming (schedule)

Festival of International Short Films – featuring music soundtracks from around the world

Grand Procession (Parade to kick off evening performances – Starts 5:30 at Hynes Convention Center)

Ethnic groups which will be marching include Caribbean Bandleaders, The Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association, The Hot Tamales, New Mongolian Jazz Band, and Samba Tremeterra

Evening Programming (schedule)

Anat Cohen (with other Berklee alumni and students) – includes elements of Brazilian choro, Argentine Tango, and Afro-Cuban genres

Bombay Cinema (c0ntinues) – a film festival (featuring Bollywood music soundtracks)

Boston Bhangra – pop-oriented music and dance from the Punjab region of India 

Cinkestra – circus music which includes elements of gypsy, Klezmer, and jazz genres

Either/Orchestra – global fusion jazz including elements of Afro-Latin and Caribbean music

Fernando Otero – Argentine tango music

Los Sugar Kings – Afro-Cuban Son, Salsa, and Rumba-Flamenco music styles

Nadav Remez Quintet – lead by Israeli guitarist/composer Nadav Remez

Anime Film Festival (continues) – featuring music soundtracks from this popular film genre from Japan

OrigiNation, Inc. and O’Shea-Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance – “First Night Boot”: dancers perform African-influenced genres of hip-hop, jazz, tap, step, and Caribbean dance in combination with traditional and contemporary Irish dance

Virago – world fusion combination of rock , blues, and samba

This festive evening ends with a fireworks display on the waterfront, of course, at midnight. Always a nice way to bring in the New Year!
