Join Ethiopian Superstar Mahmoud Ahmed and Boston’s Own Either/Orchestra for a Superb Evening of Jazz Fusion: March 24th, Thursday @ 7:30 or 10:00 p.m.

Watch Mahmoud Ahmed perform with  the Either/Orchestra.

Mahmoud Ahmed is literally the most popular singer currently performing in Ethiopia today. Now, here’s your chance to experience this great artist up close at the Regattabar in the Charles Hotel. He will be bringing you the sounds of world fusion, a mixture of Ethiopian, jazz, and Afro-Cuban genres, accompanied by Grammy nominees the Either/Orchestra who will be adding their own additional special touches to the mix . Although Ahmed frequently performs with this local Boston ensemble, it is only the 3rd time they will be appearing together in the US and we are fortunate enough to have it happening right here in Boston, Massachusetts!

Coming from the humble beginnings of a shoe shine boy, Mahmoud Ahmed eventually found his career in music performing, at first, as a substitute artist with the popular Ethiopian ensemble, the Imperial Body Guard Band. He proved to be such a smashing success that he soon became a permanent group member as their lead singer. He then managed to continue to rise in national popularity, appearing with the country’s top artists, despite the Ethiopian governments attempts to suppress the performance of popular music in general within the country. Then in the early 80’s he went on tour in the US and was heavily endeared by the Ehtiopian diaspora community there. In 1986 his international stardom among this diaspora took hold in Europe as well, with the release of a number of his recordings on the Belgian Crammed Discs label. In 2007 Ahemd won a highly coveted BBC World Music Award despite heavy competition from the like of Ali Farka Toure, Bongo Maffin, and Toumani Diabate.

The Either/Orchestra (E/O), founded in 1985 by Grammy Award winner saxophonist and composer Russ Gershon, has had and continues to have a number of opportunities to perform with some of Ethiopa’s greatest music stars. This ten piece ensemble has toured heavily on a national and international basis and has released no less than seven cds. Their particular style of highly danceable jazz, which is a characteristic blend of African, Latin, American, and Caribbean influences, is not only highly original but also ever evolving, and presented with a lot of emotion. Since 1997, the group has been presenting their own original jazz versions of Ethiopian compositions and were the very first American ensemble ever invited to actually travel to Ethiopia to perform in a national music festival. You can support this very popular Boston-based ensemble in their latest of such overseas endeavors, a collaborative effort with Nerses Nalbandian, at  At any rate, if you can make it out to the Regattabar for this very special concert, you will not only be highly entertained by the collaborative efforts of these highly accomplished artists, but also afforded the rare opportunity to enjoy this great music in a small, intimate club atmosphere.
