Celebrate an Italian Style Christmas with Folk Ensemble Newpoli: December 15th, Wednesday @ 9:00 p.m.
Listen to Newpoli.
Why not visit a little bit of ye old Italy this holiday season? Just let the very popular folk ensemble Newpoli be your hosts for an evening of traditional Italian Christmas carols dating from the 11th – 19th centuries. This nine piece vocal/instrumental ensemble is a local favorite performing at Boston’s top venues and touring nationally all the way to the West coast, bringing to its audiences the traditional music of southern Italy, a genre rarely heard here in the United States or abroad for that matter. Although the concert will most assuredly have its quieter moments, you will definitely feel just like you are attending a lively holiday party for most of the evening. This is the group’s first Boston performance of “An Italian Christmas Celebration” which consists of a program of sung folk prayers and tarantellas, most of which display the type of musical energy that makes one want to jump up and move their feet- hence the party atmosphere! As an added bonus, band members will be sharing folk tales which reveal the true meaning behind the lyrics of each song.
Newpoli was founded in 2003 by two aspiring jazz vocal students at the Berklee College of Music by the names of Carmen Maisico and Angela Rossi, who observed that the music of their native Italy was rarely if ever performed by any of Boston’s local artists. So, they very passionately took on the mission of researching the various folk genres of southern Italy and forming a local group to share these wonderful, seemingly lost musical treasures with the rest of the world. Since then, in addition to gaining a wide fan base, Newpoli has gone on to appear on Italian National television (RAI International) and record a cd five years later. These graduates of the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory bring their jazz-oriented training into play as they add just a little bit of extra spice to their musical interpretation of traditional Neapolitan genres. The ensemble’s instrumentation includes lead and backup vocals, as well as an instrumental accompaniment of tamorra (a percussion folk instrument), additional percussion, accordion, guitar, double bass, violin, and flute. Newpoli has gained quite a reputation for successfully winning over each and every audience for which they perform with their infectious energy so you can pretty well rest assured that they will win you over too.
